Sapporo Specialties – Souvenirs, Gourmet Food, and THC Sapporo Part 2

- Must-Try Local Dishes in Sapporo
Souvenirs are important, but when you visit Sapporo, be sure to enjoy the local cuisine as well. Here are some must-try classics.
3-1. Sapporo Miso Ramen
Sapporo is one of Japan’s leading ramen cities. Sapporo miso ramen features a rich, slightly oily miso-based soup topped with ingredients like corn, butter, and roasted pork. With many famous ramen restaurants in Susukino and the city center, you’re sure to find a bowl you love.
3-2. Jingisukan

Jingisukan is a dish of lamb or mutton grilled on a dome-shaped hot plate. A beloved dish among Hokkaido residents, there are many specialty restaurants in Sapporo. The meat is juicy and pairs perfectly with beer. If you’re trying it for the first time, we recommend going with friends or colleagues and sharing a hearty meal.
3-3. Soup Curry

Another famous local dish is soup curry. It’s a spicy, flavorful broth topped with large portions of vegetables and meat, served with rice. Each restaurant has its own unique style, ranging from extra spicy to super spicy, so you can choose your preferred level of spiciness. Many tourists who try soup curry in Sapporo once say they want to return just to enjoy the same soup.
3-4. Fresh Seafood and Sushi
Sapporo’s proximity to rich fishing grounds ensures exceptionally fresh seafood. Enjoy sushi, seafood bowls, crab, scallops, and more. Morning markets and local sushi restaurants often use seasonal seafood, so you can enjoy different flavors depending on the month you visit.
3-5. “Shime Parfait” – A Sweet End to the Night

One of the most unique aspects of Sapporo’s food culture is the “shime parfait.” Instead of ending the night with ramen, many locals and tourists enjoy a parfait as a “shime” (finishing off) after drinking alcohol. Susukino has many parfait specialty shops that are open late into the night, serving beautiful, Instagram-worthy parfaits made with Hokkaido milk and seasonal fruits.
If you’re enjoying Sapporo’s nightlife, be sure to try a Shime Parfait at least once. It’s a truly “Sapporo-esque” experience.
