An event was held on the 18th to celebrate the first birthday of Lenka, the first bottlenose dolphin to be successfully bred at an aquarium in Hokkaido.

Lenka, a female bottlenose dolphin, turned one year old at Otaru Aquarium on the 18th, marking the first successful case of bottlenose dolphin breeding at an aquarium in Hokkaido. At the event, Lenka was presented with an ice birthday cake topped with horse mackerel, her favorite food.

Visitors commented, “Lenka was so cute,” and gave her enthusiastic reviews, with comments like, “(Q: How did you feel celebrating her birthday?) I was so happy,” and “She’s just so cute! I’m so happy I came here just for today.”

There are approximately 200 bottlenose dolphins in captivity across the country, but it is said that it will be difficult to maintain this number at the current breeding rate. However, Otaru Aquarium hopes to continue breeding them in the future.
