Introducing Zenibako

Zenibako is a laid-back beach area on the Otaru side of Sapporo. It’s conveniently located for a half-day stay, yet quiet enough to experience a different pace of life. The JR Hakodate Main Line runs every few minutes, taking approximately 25-30 minutes from Sapporo Station for a fare of 450-600 yen.

When you disembark at Zenibako Station, you’ll find yourself right on the sand. With the coastline within easy reach, this is one of the most enjoyable beach walks near Sapporo.

Enjoy the gentle waves and the majestic sunsets as you relax at one of the small cafes dotted around the station. Enjoy classic coffee shops, gelato, and coffee with ocean views.

History buffs will also appreciate the origin of the station’s name. “Zenibako” literally means “piggy bank” and was named after the safes used in fishermen’s huts during the herring boom. A large, iconic coin box is on display at the station.
